"The finest public course I've ever seen or played on," Lloyd Mangrum said as he accepted the trophy and winner's check of $2,600. Left to right: Tom O'Donnell, general chairman of the Eastern Open; Tommy D'Alesandro Jr., Mayor of Baltimore; H. P. McLaughlin, representative of the Gunther Brewing Co., sponsor of the tournament; and Lloyd Mangrum, the tournament winner.
Editor's notes: The scores are taken from the August 30, 1950 issue of Golf World. It appears that all scores by all golfers are not listed. My guess is that, instead of listing scores that would not have placed the golfer in the money, or not having made the 54-hole cut, the magazine listed the golfers as having "withdrawn." Those golfers who did not make the 36-hole cut are shown as "DNQ."
Additionally, Golf World did not list all those who competed in the tournament. The Baltimore Sun, in its coverage of the event, included this paragraph:
"Frank Michalek, of the host course, won low-amateur honors with a five-over-par 293. Ralph Bogart, of Chevy Chase, was second low-amateur, at 297. Walter Romans, of the Baltimore Country Club, finished in a tie with Freddie Haas for seventh place at 286, and captured the low-Maryland-professional honor."
The Baltimore Sun reported that Mr. Michalek was awarded the Governor Lane Trophy for his performance, and that Mr. Romans was awarded a watch.
Why Jim Turnesa was listed out of order is not known.
Clayton Heafner's first-round score of 65 set the course record. The mark would stand until Tommy Bolt shot 64 in the first round of the 1957 tournament, which he went on to win by four shots. Bolt's 64 has never been bettered or equaled. Bob Crow's second-round score of 100 is the highest recorded by any competitor in any Eastern Open.
