Left to right: C. Bruce Earnest, representative of the Baltimore Sun, the tournament's financial sponsor; Unidentified Happy Woman, probably the Tournament Queen; Sam Snead, the winner; and Tom O'Donnell, general chairman of the tournament.
Editor's notes: Sam Snead's four-round total of 275 set a tournament record that would never be bettered or equaled.
Golf World was willing to hint at the issue of appearance fees paid to golfers, but not address it directly. In its article on the 1952 Eastern Open, it wrote, "Sam hit the greens well and boosted his winnings in PGA tourneys this year to $18,441. He'll have to pay Uncle Sam on a lot more of which PGA statistics take no cognizance."
Snead was paid a $500 appearance fee to play in this tournament.
Neither Golf World nor the PGA Magazine listed all the golfers who competed in the tournament. Golf World wrote, "Starters totaled 132. The field was narrowed to 74 after two rounds, in which the pros had to do 151 or better. Ted Bishop of Boston and Bill Cole of Baltimore were the best amateurs in a tie at 298."
